🧰 Before You Call for Help: 5 Things to Check When Your Heater Isn’t Working
When a chilly Texas morning hits and your heater isn’t keeping up, it can be frustrating — and cold! But don’t worry — before you call for service, there are a few quick and safe checks you can do. Many times, the issue is something simple that you can fix in minutes.
⚠️ Safety First
If you smell gas, see sparks, or suspect an electrical problem, turn the system off immediately and leave the area.
If you feal uncomfortable don’t try these steps.
1️⃣ Check Your Breakers
Start with the electrical panel. Make sure all of your HVAC breakers are ON and none are tripped.
If one is off, flip it completely off and then back on. A tripped breaker is one of the most common (and easiest) fixes for a “dead” heater.
2️⃣ Verify the Gas Supply
If you have a gas furnace, make sure the gas valve at the meter and the furnace are both turned on.
The handle should be parallel with the pipe. If the gas is off and you’re unsure why, call your gas provider before turning it back on.
3️⃣ Check the Thermostat Batteries
If your thermostat screen is blank or flickering, the batteries may be weak.
Replace them with new ones — most thermostats use AA or AAA — and see if your system responds.
4️⃣ Inspect or Replace the Air Filter
A dirty filter can block airflow, cause overheating, and trigger a system shutdown.
1” filter: Replace every month.
4” filter: Replace about every 6 months.
If your filter looks dirty, swap it out and see if your heater starts working again.
5️⃣ Check the Condensate Drain Line
Even in heating mode, some systems produce condensation. A clogged drain line can activate a safety switch that shuts down your heater.
Look for standing water near the furnace or a full drain pan. If you see water, that’s a likely culprit.
💡 When to Call a Professional
If you’ve checked all of the above and still have no heat, it’s time to call in the pros. You may have a bad sensor, control board, or other component that requires trained service.
